We are delighted to share highlights from our Welcoming ceremony held at the Academy for Environmental Leadership SA on 19 February when we welcomed an inspiring group of students and their parents.
Dr. Matthys Strydom, Head of the Academic Program, extended a warm welcome to the Class of 2024 and introduced the AEL management team and support staff. Heidi Bartis, CEO of the AEL, emphasized the primary reason the AEL exists: to grow the environmental custodians of the future, which aligns with the institution’s core values of striving for excellence and showing respect for nature and those around us. She motivated students with the special AEL word for 2024 – “GRIT”, referencing Angela Lee Duckworth’s book on the power of success, and what it means to have ‘grit’.
Professor Leopoldt van Huyssteen, Director and Executive Academic Head, delivered a thought-provoking speech, challenging students to become critical thinkers, problem solvers in the face of global challenges and change agents. He shared valuable insights on the unique AEL academic program, blending natural and social sciences, environmentally related legislation, and a strong practical basis. The outdoor laboratory setting, with its diverse ecological systems, was presented as an opportunity for students to learn through doing. He further stressed the importance of discipline, self-reliance, and active participation in shaping one’s academic journey.
We are thrilled with the enthusiastic nature of the class of 2024 and look forward to a successful year ahead.
