From 10–22 August 2025, AEL students took part in one of the most inspiring journeys of their academic careers: the Richtersveld Academic Tour. This immersive 12-day experience carried them across the Northern Cape’s unique landscapes, combining fieldwork, industry visits, and ecological exploration.
The Richtersveld became the classroom. Students encountered South Africa’s extraordinary biodiversity first-hand, moving through multiple biomes and discovering how climate, soil, and human activity shape the environment.
Highlights of the tour included:
🌱 Succulent Karoo & Desert flora – exploring adaptations and conservation challenges in the |Ai-|Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.
🌱Ramsar Wetlands at Alexander Bay – examining wetland ecosystems and human impacts.
🌱Restoration projects – engaging in plant propagation and rehabilitation efforts.
🌱Sustainable aquaculture – gaining insights into abalone farming and the future of seafood security.
🌱 Mining rehabilitation – visiting Black Mountain Mine to understand how damaged ecosystems could recover.
🌱Renewable energy solutions – touring Kangnas Wind Farm and Kaxu Solar Farm to learn how South Africa was advancing a cleaner energy future.
At its core, the tour revealed the interconnectedness of ecology, conservation, and industry. Teaching our students that balance is key to protecting biodiversity while supporting human livelihoods.
