What is Nature Conservation?

Nature conservation is the protection, management and restoration of the natural world – from plants and animals to rivers, forests, oceans, and the air we breathe. It’s about protecting the ecosystems that sustain our planet and maintaining an environment rich in biodiversity.

But what is biodiversity?

Biodiversity means the variety of life on Earth: from tiny insects and fungi to big animals, plants, and even the microbes in the soil. It includes all the different species, the places they live (or habitats), and the ways they interact with each other and the environment.

You can think of biodiversity like a sports team or orchestra; every player or instrument has a role to play. When all the parts work together, the system is strong, balanced, and resilient. But if too many players drop out or one part takes over, the whole system starts to break down.

The Nine Planetary Boundaries

Scientists have identified nine key systems, or the nine planetary boundaries, that keep our planet stable and safe for human life. Think of them like the safety settings on a machine, but if we push any of them too far, we risk causing severe damage to Earth’s ability to support life. 

Six of the nine boundaries have already been pushed past safe levels, which is why conservation work is more important than ever.

1. Climate Change

Earth’s climate is warming due to human activities, such as burning coal, oil, and gas. This adds too many greenhouse gases (especially carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere.

Status: This boundary has been crossed.

Why it matters for conservation: In South Africa, this affects everything from our water supplies to our farming systems.

2. Novel Entities

These are human-made substances, such as plastics, chemicals, and genetically modified materials, that don’t naturally break down.

Status: This boundary has been crossed.

Why it matters for conservation: In South Africa, conservationists work to reduce pollution and restore balance.

3. Stratospheric Ozone Depletion

Certain chemicals, once used in aerosols and refrigeration, damaged the ozone layer – the layer that protects us from ultraviolet radiation – harming plants, animals, and humans.

Status: Currently within the safe zone, thanks to global action to ban harmful chemicals.

Why it matters for conservation: This is a success story. It shows that when the world works together, we can fix environmental problems.

4. Atmospheric Aerosol Loading

Tiny particles in the air, such as smoke, dust, and industrial pollution, affect climate and air quality. Aerosols can change rainfall patterns and make the air harder to breathe.

5. Ocean Acidification

South Africa is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, but that richness makes it especially vulnerable. Here’s what’s putting its ecosystems at risk, how it connects to biodiversity loss, and why it makes conservation work here so urgent:

1. Habitat Loss

Every time natural areas are cleared, it’s like removing tiles from a mosaic. Over time, the whole picture starts to break apart. In South Africa:

  • Diamond mining in Namaqualand destroys coastal dune ecosystems and the habitat of species like the endangered Van Zyl’s golden mole
  • Offshore oil and gas exploration along the West Coast disturbs marine ecosystems and fishing communities
  • Fracking in the Karoo threatens scarce water resources and unique succulent flora and fauna
  • Clearing fynbos for agriculture or forestry removes habitat for thousands of plant and insect species found only in the Cape region
  • Wetland destruction, especially around Cape Town and Pretoria, reduces key water storage and habitat areas

Rapid shifts in temperature and rainfall are pushing many species beyond their tolerance. In South Africa:

4. Invasive Alien Species
