Equipped to Respond: The First Aid Course Experience

Introduction:
First aid knowledge is a valuable skill that can make a significant difference in emergency situations. Recently, the Cape Town Occupational Health and Safety Consultancy (CTOHS) presented a First Aid Course to a group of students. Led by an experienced instructor, the course provided participants with essential first aid skills, empowering them to respond effectively in critical situations.

The First Aid Course was presented by an instructor from the Cape Town Occupational Health and Safety Consultancy (CTOHS). During the course, students learned fundamental first aid techniques, including CPR, the Heimlich maneuver, and various recovery positions based on the condition of the patient. They also gained knowledge about assessing the situation before providing assistance, understanding that the role of a first aid responder is to maintain the patient’s stability until professional medical help arrives.

The skills acquired in the First Aid Course extend far beyond the academic environment. The ability to remain calm and think clearly under pressure, a key aspect of being a first aid responder, has broad applicability in various real-life situations. Additionally, in the event of an emergency, students now possess the knowledge and confidence to take appropriate action, potentially saving lives or providing vital support until professional medical help arrives.

The First Aid Course was presented in a captivating manner, capturing the attention of the students and fostering an enjoyable learning experience. The feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for gaining the knowledge and skills to handle emergencies. Knowing what to do in critical situations instills a sense of preparedness and confidence among the students.

Our Academic year includes various tours to remote places, in the conservation industry it is very much the same. Being able to know what to do when the hospital is not around the corner is essential when you intend on working in isolated places. Exposing the students to a course like this emphasises the importance of being prepared and aware of their circumstances.

“This is the group I look forward to seeing every year” says Jasper de Klerk, the CTOHS instructor. He further elaborates that young people are more engaging, ask relevant questions and their eagerness to learn is refreshing.

Conclusion:
The First Aid Course presented by the Cape Town Occupational Health and Safety Consultancy equipped students with vital skills to respond effectively in emergencies. Beyond the academic realm, the course instilled a sense of preparedness and the ability to remain calm under pressure. The relevance of first aid knowledge extends to various aspects of life, empowering individuals to make a difference and provide critical support when it matters most. By completing the course, the students have gained valuable skills that will serve them well in both their personal and professional lives, reaffirming the importance of being prepared and ready to respond in times of need.
